15-year-old Ikeuchi Aya was an ordinary girl, the daughter of a family who works at a tofu shop, and a soon-to-be high schooler. However, odd things have been happening to Aya lately. She has been falling down often and walks strange. Her mother, Shioka, takes Aya to see the doctor, and he informs Shioka that Aya has spinocerebellar degeneration - a terrible disease where the cerebellum of the brain gradually deteriorates to the point where the victim cannot walk, speak, write, or eat. A cruel disease, as it does not affect the mind in the least. This beautifully moving drama is based on the real-life struggles of a 15-year-old girl named Aya who suffered from an incurable disease, but lived life to the fullest until her death at 25. The script is based on the diary Aya kept writing until she could no longer hold a pen. The book that later followed entitled “One Litre of Tears" has sold over 1.1 million copies in Japan alone. Before she died, her writings were published including the poems she wrote while she is staying in a school for the disabled. This gave new hopes to people who suffers the same disease as she did and soon Aya received letters of appreciation and thanks from those people.

Although Aya was down with the incurable disease, she did not give up. She goes for rehabilitation, treatments, in the hope of getting cured. When she goes out, she had to overcome the fact that people stares at her, mockings, or the pity look on their faces. She cant have a boyfriend, a nice family, a future. A guy called Asou, like her. Despite knowing her illness, he still continue to help her in ways, and touched Aya's heart. But Aya rejected him, knowing he's wasting his time on her as she cant give him anything in return. Both of them were terribly sad, but they had to accept the reality that they cannot be together. After struggling for years, at the age of 25, she succumbed herself into a sleep where she could no longer feel any pain. Asou became a doctor after Aya died, and helped many people. (the last part may not be found on the show, but i watched it on the youtube.)

She's very optimistic. I should learn from her. Thank God that im still alive. The DVD that i watched from, they have bad english for the subtitles. LOL. There is this character in this show, who's Aya's boyfriend initially, but dumped her after knowing her illness. and the character is "L" from Death Note. lol. looked so different and act so differently in the shows. I feel sorry for the real Aya, who had alr gone. I cried a lot times while watching. i confess im someone who cries easily. :x(but for those who want to bully me and make me cry, well, u wont have the chance! :D ) lol. I've learnt to treasure the poeple around me.This show highly reccomended. unless u're ppl like Lindsay, who doesn't want to drop ur precious tears. =)
